I did this just for fun. The lighting is done with same area lights for sun and nebula simulation and final gathering. For shading i used the dirtmap shader and different procedural 2d shader from xsi.
Postwork is done with gimp. Motion blur of the ships is rendered in xsi using the rapid motion mode (now raterizer). The engine lights and its motion blur is done in gimp.
